Pack a Spare Shirt in Your Car Before Your First Class The smartest thing you can do before your first jiu jitsu class has nothing to do with technique....
The smartest thing you can do before your first jiu jitsu class has nothing to do with technique. Fold a clean shirt, drop it in your car, and forget about it until you're walking back out to the parking lot. That's it.
Future you, still catching your breath and pleasantly wrecked, will be very glad it's there.
Here's why that one small move matters more than most people expect, and a few other things worth stashing alongside it.
Even a beginner-friendly first class involves rolling around on the mat, working through slow-paced positions, and moving your whole body in ways a treadmill never asks for. You warm up, you drill, you maybe do a light round. By the end, the shirt you walked in wearing is done.
San Antonio makes this worse in the friendliest way possible. We don't get a real cooldown until late fall, and even then the humidity likes to stick around. A class that runs into the evening still leaves you damp when you step back outside off 1604 or wherever you're headed.
Nobody wants to drive home in a shirt that's soaked through, then sit in it at a red light on the way to pick up dinner. A dry shirt waiting in the car fixes that in ten seconds.
There's a quieter reason the spare shirt helps, and it's the whole point of the pillar we care about most: getting adults comfortable enough to actually show up.
When you know you've got a clean shirt in the car, your first class stops being a big production. You're not planning your whole evening around it. You can come straight from work, train, change in the parking lot, and go grab tacos without a second thought.
That casualness is what makes a beginner stick around. The people who train for years aren't the ones who treated day one like a life event. They're the ones who made it easy to come back.
Once you've got the spare shirt idea, it's worth building a small kit so your first few weeks run smooth. None of this is required to walk in the door, but it removes friction.
That's a bag that lives in your trunk and asks nothing of you. You restock it once and it just works.
For a first jiu jitsu class, you don't need a gi yet. A fitted t-shirt or rash guard and athletic shorts without pockets, zippers, or buttons will do. Loose pockets catch fingers and toes when you're grappling, and nobody enjoys that.
If you're coming to try Muay Thai or wrestling instead, same idea. Comfortable athletic clothes you can move and sweat in, nothing you'd be sad to see get a little beat up.
When you're ready for a gi, we'll point you toward the right size and weight. There's no rush to buy anything before you know you love it.
A lot of adults sit in the parking lot before their first class wondering if they're about to embarrass themselves. That feeling is so common it's practically part of the warm-up. Everybody currently rolling on our mats felt it once.
What actually happens is calmer than the nerves suggest. A coach walks you through where to stand, how to move, what the class is doing that day. You're paired with people who remember exactly what day one felt like.
At Pinnacle Martial Arts, that welcome is something we take seriously, because a nervous first-timer who feels at home is a person who comes back Thursday.
The spare shirt is just one more thing that keeps the whole experience low-pressure. You handle the small logistics ahead of time so your brain is free to focus on the fun part.
You'll finish your first class a little sweaty, a little tired, and usually grinning about it. You'll head to the parking lot, grab that dry shirt, and swap it out. The wet one goes in the bag.
You feel human again before you've even started the car.
That's a small win, but small wins are what get people to class number two. San Antonio adults juggling work, family, and the drive across town don't need one more thing that feels like a hassle. They need training that fits into a normal evening.
If you've been thinking about trying jiu jitsu, Muay Thai, or wrestling and just haven't walked in yet, come see what a class actually feels like. We offer a free VIP tour and a trial class so you can stand on the mat with zero pressure and decide for yourself. Bring the spare shirt.
You'll want it on the way home.
